Time for some Christmas cheer? Sharing this article on The Drum by my colleague, Branwell Johnson, which delves into the latest Advertising Association / WARC figures which forecasts a £10.5bn record ad spend this festive season... From inventive campaigns to a shift in media strategies, it’s clear that brands and agencies are adapting to make an impact during this crucial period, with the likes of Boots, Asda and Waitrose all finding inventive ways to stand out. I was pleased to contribute to the piece, reflecting on how brands are navigating challenges while embracing new opportunities:  “Amid a challenging year, brands are proving resilient and ready to innovate. I was happy to chat with Clare McKinley in her latest Basis blog advising agencies on how they can best learn and evolve! As I mentioned to Clare, fragmentation and the proliferation of platforms required to execute and manage media are some of the most pressing challenges for agencies today. There’s no doubt that #AI has reshaped industries and workflows across the globe, unlocking opportunities we could have only dreamt of a few years ago! But, as with any powerful tool, its impact depends on how we choose to use it. While there is immense potential in using AI to streamline certain tasks, when it comes to #content generation, it simply cannot replace genuine, human thought-leading advice. The 5 essential characteristics of a great CMO One of the questions Antonia Wade asked me on our reverse interview for Uncensored CMO was what made a great CMO I have had the honour of meeting many of the World's best and as I thought about the question I landed on 5 things ⭐ Represent the customer where decisions get made - this is a quote from Mark Ritson and I think understanding your market and customer is fundamental to your success ⭐ The ability to get things done - one of my favourite quotes from Kory Marchisotto was that success is defined by the distance between insight and action. ⭐ Owning long term brand health - most other roles are about immediate results but the CMO is uniquely positioned to look ahead and plan how to create a stronger brand in the future. ⭐ Enabling the entire team to succeed - As a CMO your job is to lead people rather than do it yourself so success depends on hiring talent, training, delegating & team building. ⭐ Navigating organisational politics - I was tempted not to include this one but in larger corporations in particular an ability to navigate the politics can make all the difference There are many great CMO episodes of the podcast but if you want one focussed on the role itself check out Craig Inglis here CMO Masterclass https://lnkd.in/eatpw7CH For more thoughts on what I learnt from 150 podcast episodes check out the links in the comments Kerry Collinge Sophie Devonshire⚡️

This is unbelievably good. I doubt any CFO in history has read your IPA effectiveness case study but they might be interested in this. A way to show the future value of advertising spend now - in terms of discounted cashflow. The deck illustrates the power of discounted cashflow as a measure that allows finance departments to compare advertsing to other forms of investment. It shows how adverting is often a less risky investment in than others a company might make and it shows that great creative (god knows how they are evaluating this and a bit of me fears its some hokey pretesting method) and high value media channels. More than that magic numbers have a tool for calculating discounted cashflow. All of this leans into the increasing conversation about whether advertising should be seen as capital expenditure or operating expenditure in that potent advertising creates assets (real assets not pieces of copy) that the business will benefit from in the future and for a number of years. Best thing I've read in ages.

Omar Oakes in The Media Leader UK touching on one of the biggest issues of our age. Network Media Agencies are having to turn to 'products' (many non-transparent) to find additional margin as pressure mounts on them to replace lost margins in creative, production and other disciplines within the Holding Companies. Selling products for a mark-up shouldn't be a core feature of a service industry. Adding value through strategic insights, sophisticated media planning and effective (not just efficient) execution should be the way that agencies demonstrate value and drive margin. Charging properly for this has to be the solution rather than today's race for the bottom of faster, better, cheaper. Hopefully this will be discussed at the Future of Media conference happening today and tomorrow from Adwanted UK events.
